More Details: I have a very rare old-school 1974 for sale. Has 18R engine (gas mileage 20+) Surprisingly decent power for such a small engine. 4 speed manual. Sleeps 2 adults inside camper and 2 children on pullout platform above cab (or that area can be used for storage. It’s pretty much in it’s original condition from the time period so you can restore or customize (according to your preference) Has working 2 burner stove. Has sink and water holding tank (not sure of the plumbing condition since I’ve never used it, but probably needs repair to be functional) Regular standard Icebox, porto-potty, Closet area, Couch seats pull out to make bed. Has pop-top which gives you about 6′ 3″ of headroom when raised.
Vehicle runs and drives, is registered, NEVER NEEDS SMOGGING due to it’s age exemption. Odometer says 40K odd miles. Hard to say it it’s that or 140K since it only goes up to 5 digits and I’m not the original owner. Original owner was in his 90’s when he surrendered it to his son whom I bought it from.
This vehicle is a project so be prepared to do some work to get it into optimal condition. If you don’t want to put time and effort into this vehicle then it’s not for you and best not to waste each other’s time on questions/inquiries.
I’ll do my best to explain what it needs first off.
Engine starts a bit rough when cold. Once you got it going and warmed it up runs decent, but probably needs a tune-up. Possible that the ignition timing is a bit off. UPDATE: Leak at exhaust manifold seems to be fixed. It was missing a bolt so I replaced it and it runs and sounds much better.
It is “old school” so doesn’t have power steering. Takes a little muscle to steer it. Turning radius is not the best so you need a decently wide road area to pull a u-turn.
Shocks probably need replacing, drives fairly good on flat even surfaces, but the ride is a bit rough on a bumpy, pot-hole filled street. tire tread is fairly decent on all four tires.
Mirrors are ok, but could really use extensions.
AC is aftermarket (or so the previous owner said) and not sure if it’s functioning correctly.
Old school radio/cassette is ancient. Definitely needs replacing.
Lights all work, windshield wipers also, but seem to only have one speed. I guess they were just made that way in 1974. :/
Seats are old and have covers on them. No carpet in cab.
Lights in camper work off of a Deep Cycle battery which is nearly new and keeps a decent reserve of power, also aids in backup for engine battery to start vehicle.
One other important note is that it does leak during a heavy rain. I’ve contained the leaks but it will need repair to the side rails in the roof structure to completely fix the problem. You could conceivable still use the camper in it’s existing condition, without too much problem, but the underlying structural defect must be addressed at some point.
Canvas in top is ok for it’s age. No visible rips or punctures. Screen in rear is ok, unzips most of the way around. Front screen will need some repair (zippers are stuck).
I have to emphasize that it’s a “Project” and should be treated as such, but it can be driven away and appears to be safe to drive in it’s present condition.
These small, fuel efficient campers are getting increasingly hard to find and are great RV’s for various uses if taken proper care of. I wanted to restore it and do some more extended camping (used it about 4 times so far) but cannot put the time in anymore and have to sell! 🙁
Vehicle sold as-is!
